Helping Your Anxious Child Achieve a Healthy Smile: IV Sedation for Dental Care

At Dentistry for Children, we understand that dental visits can be a source of anxiety for both children and parents. This is especially true for children with severe cavities who may require extensive treatment. Fortunately, IV sedation offers a safe and effective solution to help your anxious child receive the dental care they need.

When is IV Sedation Recommended?

IV sedation may be recommended for children who:

  • Experience significant anxiety or fear at the dentist, making traditional treatment difficult.
  • Have a strong gag reflex that interferes with dental procedures.
  • Require multiple or complex dental procedures.

Benefits of IV Sedation for Anxious Children

IV sedation provides numerous benefits for both your child and yourself:

  • Reduces Anxiety and Fear: During IV sedation, your child will be in a relaxed, comfortable state, minimizing anxiety and fear throughout the procedure.
  • Pain-Free Treatment: Sedation medication ensures your child feels no pain during the procedure, promoting a positive dental experience.
  • Effective Treatment Completion: Allows our team to complete necessary dental work thoroughly and efficiently, promoting long-term oral health.
  • Clear expectations: A final treatment plan is discussed with parents prior to start of any dental work. Once consent is obtained, all necessary treatment is completed in one visit.
  • Reduced Stress for Parents: Peace of mind knowing your child is comfortable and receiving the best possible care.

What to Expect During IV Sedation

Before the Procedure:

  • A thorough consultation with Dr. Sultan is needed to discuss your child’s medical history and suitability for IV sedation.
  • Pre-operative instructions will be provided, including fasting guidelines.

During the Procedure:

  • A qualified anesthesiologist will administer the sedative medication through an intravenous (IV) line.
  • Your child will remain conscious but in a relaxed state.
  • If a complete treatment plan was not created during the initial consultation visit, dental radiographs and intraoral photos will be first obtained.
  • Dr. Sultan will review the dental radiographs and intraoral photos with the parents to finalize the treatment plan prior to the start of any dental work.
  • Once a finalized treatment plan is created and parents consent to treatment, our experienced dental team will perform all the necessary dental procedures in one visit.

After the Procedure:

  • Your child will be monitored in a recovery area until fully awake and comfortable.
  • Post-operative instructions will be provided to ensure proper care at home.
  • All of our patients are scheduled to return in one week to review any post-operative issues and concerns and for Dr. Sultan to monitor the healing processes.

Safety Assurances:

  • At Dentistry for Children, your child’s safety is our top priority.

    • We use state-of-the-art monitoring equipment throughout the sedation process.
    • Experienced and qualified anesthesiologists collaborate with our dental team to ensure optimal care.
